It’s that time of year again when thousands of gamers descend upon Indianapolis, IN to attend GenCon. Boasting record growth last year, I expect this year to be even better than the last.
“INDIANAPOLIS (August 23, 2012) – Gen Con Indy returned to the Indiana Convention Center last weekend, August 16-19, to commemorate a special 45th Anniversary as well as its 10th Anniversary in the city of Indianapolis. Launched with an official proclamation by Indianapolis mayor Greg Ballard, the nation’s largest annual consumer fantasy, sci-fi and adventure gaming convention continued its record growth with a turnstile attendance record of 134,775, including more than 41,000 unique attendees.”
From the 2012 press release
I have been fortunate enough to attend GenCon for several years running and the experience gets better every year. The convention center in Indianapolis is incredible and the event planners do a fantastic job laying everything out. This year I am fortunate enough again to be able to attend, thanks to a truly amazing wife allowing me to go once again. Woo!
In the past I have shown up without truly making plans for certain events and finding fun games as I go. With the increasing attendance, last year was difficult to get in on everything I wanted to do. I highly suggest purchasing those tickets for the events you want to attend now and they will be ready at will call. Will call has been extended to Wednesday now allowing us to get our badges and tickets a day early and avoid the massive lines Thursday morning!
It’s difficult to narrow down what to play and when to play each one, but this year I’ve elected to pick out a few of my favorites and go from there. I spend a lot of time on my blog talking about Ascension and SolForge and Stoneblade Entertainment is once again stepping up their game. Justin Gary announced in the SolForge stream last Tuesday that their presence this year will be the largest yet! While there aren’t any events for SolForge they will have the first set updated and ready to play at their booth!
There are some sweet events this year for Ascension.
- Ascension Storm Block Championship
16-64 players. Swiss rounds with pvp top 8. Promos for each player and the Top 8 compete for playmats, promo cards, a $250 Amazon.com gift card, and a trophy!
- Ascension World Championship
8-150 players. pvp with Rise of Vigil and Darkness Unleashed. Players are again competing for playmats, promos, and gift cards. The winner gets an Ipad, trophy, and an Ascension card created for them!
Another great deck building game is having some impressive events as well. Marvel Legendary by UDE is hosting two 5k tournaments this year!
- Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game – $5K Tournament
Top 25 finishers receive a playmat and cash prizes with the top 5 also winning a copy of the Dark City expansion.
Those are the events I’m most excited about and I’ll find many more as I search through the event catalog. The demo hall is the second greatest part of GenCon where established companies and upcoming ones show off their games. Nothing beats finding that game of the convention that you bring back with you to the hotel and play with the rest of your friends. Last year’s breakout game was Spartacus!
Head over to Gencon’s website and see what the convention is all about!
Until next time, get your games in!
